Singapore-based aquaculture service provider Blue Aqua International has formed a partnership with VeChain Technology to apply blockchain traceability to its shrimp-farming operations.
Blue Aqua will implement VeChain’s blockchain-based traceability system to improve the traceability of its seafood sourcing and better insure the quality and sustainability its products, it said in a 14 September announcement.
VeChain ToolChain blockchain data service platform will help Blue Aqua provide full traceability throughout its supply chain, allowing the company’s customers to track various data including the sourcing of its post-larvae shrimp, its feed type and consumption, farming methodologies, culturing period and harvest times “from the point of inception to the point of consumption, Blue Aqua said. The platform will also help Blue Aqua track its operations in the alternative protein arena and the upcycling of meal-to-feed for fishmeal replacement in aquafeeds, it said.
“Taking into account the question of sustainable seafood in the market, this collaboration will harness the power of blockchain to assure consumers with unalterable, transparent data, and build trust in aquaculture and seafood produced through practical and sustainable methods.” Blue Aqua International President and Founder Farshad Shishehchian said.
VeChain was founded in 2015 and has offices in China, Singapore, Luxembourg, Japan, France, Italy, and the United States. VeChain Chief Marketing Officer Yvette Xia said the company is receiving significant interest from the seafood industry for its ToolChain product. Xia said the system is faster and more cost-efficient than its competitors and offers companies full data transparency for their shrimp-farming operations.
Blue Aqua has expertise in super-intensive shrimp farming, providing customers with solutions for the health optimization and animal nutrition. It currently serves more than 4,000 customers globally.
In April this year, it launched the Doctor Shrimp Academy and Clinic to support the shrimp industry globally. The initiative will work as a “center of excellence,” providing the industry with a technical and tools resource platform for shrimp farming, education, and practical aquaculture-skills training, and shrimp disease diagnostic services.
