Chinese online retailer JD.com lifted its sales of frozen seafood by 102 percent year-on-year in value terms during the first 28 hours of its 2022 Singles Day Grand Promotion.

The shopping holiday, the Chinese equivalent to the popular U.S. and European shopping extravaganzas known as Black Friday and Cyber Monday, began 11 November.

“The best-selling products were black tiger shrimps, white shrimps, seafood dumplings, frozen sea cucumber, salmon,” JD.com said in a statement provided to SeafoodSource. “Our sales of frozen seafood products in the first five hours exceeded those of the first 28 hours last year.”

Data provided by JD.com to SeafoodSource show JD.com’s sales of Suqian hairy crabs rose 476 percent year-on-year in the first 28 hours of the promotion, while vannemei shrimp sales rose 268 percent and sales of sea cucumber rose by 177 percent.

China’s e-commerce vendors have benefitted from the country’s zero-COVID policy, which has pushed more commerce online. With lockdowns in place in districts of Beijing and Guangzhou through November 2022, JD.com appears to have benefitted from rising demand for convenience-oriented food.

Yet overall, China’s e-commerce sector has suffered from weaker consumer confidence and economic growth in China, which drove the country’s total imports down 0.7 percent in October, after a 0.3 percent rise in September.
