Cooke-owned True North Seafood is debuting United States farmed Atlantic salmon portions and salmon burgers in the U.S. retail market.
The premium frozen products are made with Cooke’s U.S. Atlantic salmon that is “sustainably farmed in the cold, clear waters of the Gulf of Maine,” True North Vice President of Public Relations Joel Richardson told SeafoodSource.
The salmon, available at Harris Teeter, Hannaford, and other regional grocery stores, are raised without the use antibiotics, Richardson said.
“We are excited to bring this product to market as we feel that it meets key consumer trends with the ability to claim a ‘free-from’ statement in addition to a domestic claim,” Richardson said.
Due to the shift in buying patterns in 2020, and the “tremendous growth that has occurred across the frozen category,” True North has been developing additional frozen SKUs to balance its portfolio of fresh offerings, Richardson said.
“These new offerings are driven by delivering convenience to consumers, making seafood a simple answer to ‘What am I making for dinner tonight?’” Richardson said.
The four-pack Atlantic salmon burgers have had “tremendous retail success” in Canada, he added.
“Packed with 23 grams of protein and a simple ingredient deck, this recipe has been a crowd-pleaser and we are excited to have our offerings available this summer for U.S. consumers,” Richardson said.
True North also showcased its new frozen wild-caught red crab product at Seafood Expo North America Reconnect from 15 to 19 March.
The new product is 10.6 ounces of wild-caught deep-sea red crab sourced from Uruguay and frozen at sea. It contains 100 percent wild-caught crab meat with no additives, Richardson said. It is oriented to new consumers who are looking for an easily prepared, wild-caught crab.
In addition, the company will be expanding its Argentine red shrimp supply from the foodservice market to the U.S. retail market soon, Richardson said.
