The former Wards Cove Packing Company cannery in Egegik, Alaska is for sale (or investment) for USD 3.5 million (EUR 3.1 million).
The 30-acre cannery, which includes an additional six underwater acres, was in use by Wards Cove Packing Company from the 1960’s until its closure in 2002. There are five other canneries in the area.
The facilities include bunkhouses, a mess hall, a laundromat, a dock, crane, and 50,000 gallons of fuel storage as well as multiple boats and vehicles.
Ken Bozinoff, custodian of the site and owner of the company which owns the property, Santaska, believes he can fill a hole in the market by bringing a processing plant for late season fish from the Egegik River.
“My whole focus for even being here was to help fishermen get some more fish,” he said. “We’d just like to find some investors to come and help us do it or buy it and do something with it ... I would like to get in a travel lift and store boats and service those boats and then within ... three years start processing fish. Not 30 million pounds a year or anything, but process late [season] fish.”
Bozinoff believes that a new cannery at the site could generate more than USD 31 million (EUR 27.7 million), though he acknowledges that the numbers are only speculative.
