India: September 2019 shrimp sourcing update

The Indian shrimp industry has had a difficult first half of 2019. With disease outbreaks and natural disasters influencing production on one hand, and low market prices putting pressure on margins across the supply chain on the other hand, the outlook for the remainder of 2019 is nevertheless not that bad.

Even though India is currently still behind 2018 production figures, we expect that by the end of the year production may reach at least the same level as in 2018. Encouraged by relatively strong farm gate prices, India’s farmers have stocked their ponds for the second crop of 2019, which will be harvested between mid-September and the end of the year.
