Doug Brinsmade and Raju Selvan have formed the Black-Fin Seafood Company, an Austin, Texas, U.S.A.-based seafood processor and vendor with a focus on tuna.

Brinsmade founded Anova Food in 1995 and served as its president and CEO until 2010. He has also served in executive roles at Sea Delight, The Fishin’ Company, and Fortune Imports. In 2020, he founded What the Fish, a company focused on quality control and assurance in online seafood sales platforms.

Selvan owns and manages seafood facilities in Thailand, Indonesia, and India, and has a history of working with independent fishers and small fishing companies across Asia.

The company will operate out of a 6,400-square-meter facility hear Phuket, Thailand, equipped with super-freezers capable of chilling seafood to minus-60 degrees Celsius,

“We're dedicated to providing you with the highest quality frozen seafood, processed and packed according to international HACCP standards,” the company said in a press release.

Black-Fin Seafood Company is offering tuna, mahi, swordfish, and snapper on its website, and said it will prioritize responsible sourcing and traceability, “ensuring that consumers can make informed and ethical choices.”

“The company is dedicated to promoting sustainability, responsible business practices, and social impact, making a meaningful difference in the lives of those less fortunate,” it said.

Black-Fin will be partnering with the People Feeding People program, a local charity in Texas dedicated to feeding the less fortunate.

“For every box of fish sold, Black-Fin Seafood Company pledges to provide one meal for a hungry child who does not have a parent to lean on,” the company said. “The mission is to empower consumers to make a difference by choosing Black-Fin Seafood, as they take pride in being a platform for individuals to exercise their power to feed someone in need and create a positive impact on the world.”

Black-Fin will also be working with the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership to analyze its supply chain and make improvements to maximize the sustainability of its seafood. It will also be using the Tally software created by ThisFish to ensure its products are ethically sourced and fully traceable.

“I am genuinely thrilled to team up with Doug, as I firmly believe that our partnership will translate our shared vision into reality,” Selvan said in a press release. “Together, we aspire to create a world where people nourish one another in a sustainable and enduring manner.”
