USDA announces another surplus canned salmon purchase

The United States government has announced another wild canned pink salmon purchase, to help defray the surplus of pink salmon.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said it will purchase nearly 26,000 cases of canned wild pink salmon for the National School Lunch Program and other Federal Food and Nutrition Assistance Programs.

In August, the USDA sought to purchase 624,700 cases of pink salmon due to an influx of the species on the market. Also in August, the USDA awarded Trident with a contract to supply 324,000 pounds of frozen wild salmon fillets, worth nearly USD 3.1 million (EUR 2.8 million).

Suppliers interested in the new canned salmon contract must submit bids by 16 December; the USDA will announce the winning contracts by 23 December.

Suppliers must deliver the salmon to several cities in the Northeast and Midwest between 1 March and 30 June, 2020.
