Alaska snow, king crab quotas set

The Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADF&G) on Wednesday set the 2011-12 Bering Sea snow crab quota at 88.9 million pound, up 64 percent from last season’s 54.3-million-pound quota.

IFQ holders’ share of the quota is set at 80 million pounds, while CDQ holders’ share is set at 8.9 million pounds.

However, the previous day, ADF&G set the 2011-12 Bristol Bay red king crab quota at 7.8 million pounds, down 47 percent from last season’s 14.8-million-pound quota.

Both fisheries open on 15 October and run through 15 May, but they usually a majority of the quotas are landed after the New Year.
