Australia herring quotas may be halved as stocks decline

A report by the Department of Fisheries has found the allowable catch levels for herring need to be reduced by at least half to halt declining stock levels.

The three-year study into popular finfish species such as whiting and tailor found their stock levels were healthy.

But the same report found herring stocks were alarmingly low.

The department will now consult with recreational and commercial fishing groups to come up with a plan to help stocks recover.
