Chilean algal bloom salmon mortalities may have been sold for human consumption

Chilean authorities are investigating whether salmon mortalities resulting from an algae bloom in Chile’s Region X were sold for human consumption, according to the latest media reports.

A small vessel was discovered by the Chilean Navy near the Reloncaví Sound allegedly carrying salmon from one of the centers ravaged by the bloom with the intent to sell the fish to consumers, a prosecutor at the Public Ministry of Puerto Montt, Marcelo Maldonado, told enteratehoy.

“If this is found to be true, the reported companies would need to face justice and could be facing criminal punishment,” Maldonado said.
