Dutch group Parleviet and Van der Plas purchase French tuna company CFTO

Parlevliet & Van der Plas announced Friday, 13 May it is buying French tuna fishing company Compagnie Française du Thon Océanique (CFTO).

Parlevliet & Van de Plas (P&P), based in Katwijk, The Netherlands, employs 6,000 people and operates 25 fishing boats serving the European, African and Asian markets. The company’s purchase of CFTO, based in Concarneau, France, will increase its tuna fishing capacity, as CFTO operates 14 tuna vessels fishing in the Atlantic and Indian oceans, operating out of the Ivory Coast and the Seychelles. Last year, CFTO’s fleet caught 65,000 metric tons of tuna.

“With this acquisition, P&P will be committing itself to consolidating and strengthening CFTO’s fleet,” Parlevliet & Van der Plas said in its announcement of the deal. “As part of European fisheries heritage with strong family roots, P&P and CFTO share the same ethos of commitment to sustainable fishing and full respect for their staff, partners and clients around the world.”

The announcement said the acquisition would have no effect on employment levels at either company.
