A Beijing seafood importer is selling “silver cod” from Chile under the brand Cabillaud - the French word for cod, adding to ongoing confusion in China over seafood species naming in the retail and foodservice sector.
Beijing Hai Ying Ge Food Products Co., which operates out of an address at the city’s giant Jing Shen seafood wholesale market in Fengtai district, is selling the “silver cod” at CNY 598 (USD 90, EUR 77) per kilogram at outlets of the high end BHG supermarket chain in Beijing. Hai Ying Ge is using a processor in Beijing – Beijing Er Shang Mo Qi Zheng Hong Food Co. – to cut and package the steaks.

Norway has pushed hard in the past two years to create a market among Chinese consumers for what it’s marketing as “Arctic Norwegian cod.”
