Although the fishery is shuttered at the moment, some Maine shrimp will become available for sale to consumers this winter.
The fishery, which has been closed since 2013, will remain as such throughout 2016, an interstate regulatory board determined. However, the board has given permission to a research program to sell its shrimp to the public.
The research programs will deploy four shrimp trawlers to collect up to 1,800 pounds of shrimp per trip, according to WCSH 6; two additional trappers will be allowed to haul up to 600 pounds of shrimp per trip as well. Altogether, the research program will bring in slightly over 48,000 pounds of shrimp per year.
