Mainers to attempt record lobster roll

A Maine lobster marketer will aim to make a world-record lobster roll and then sell it for charity.

Linda Bean's Perfect Maine, along with a Portland, Maine, neighborhood association, will attempt to secure a place in the Guinness Book of World Records by building a record-setting 60-foot lobster roll. The attempt will take place on Sunday, 7 June in Portland during the city's annual Old Port Festival.

Linda Bean, granddaughter of retail legend L.L. Bean, operates lobster-buying stations at Vinalhaven Island, Port Clyde and Tenants Harbor, Maine. Bean says the lobster roll will use no fillers like celery.

Bean has started opening stands along the coast of Maine and in Florida that feature her special-recipe lobster rolls. This summer they will be located in Searsport, Camden, Port Clyde and Freeport, Maine; and in Del Ray Beach, Fla. Bean hopes to locate one in Portland as well.

After the record-setting lobster roll is assembled and certified for Guinness, it will be sold to festival attendees to raise funds to support the West End Neighborhood Association's Swimming Scholarship Fund. The funds will benefit nearly 250 children in Portland's West End, considered Maine's most demographically diverse neighborhood.

For a USD 20 (EUR 15) donation, festival attendees will receive an official Guinness Book of World Records certificate of authentication and be served a piece of the Linda Bean's Perfect Maine™ Lobster Roll along with a beverage and a bag of potato chips.
