Marine Harvest outsources its global IT infrastructure

Norwegian farmed salmon producer Marine Harvest has contracted with Orange Business Service as a means to hone its IT strategy and spur international growth.

Over the course of the 5-year, USD 12 million (EUR 10.5 million) contract, Orange Business Services will manage Marine Harvest’s global infrastructure in such a way as to enhance collaboration and production throughout the producer’s operations in 24 countries and sales offices in over 50 markets.

For Marine Harvest – which processes fish in a number of remote areas including Canada, Chile, the Faroe Islands, Ireland, Norway and Scotland – network reliability is a must to maintain business. According to Orange, any given network failure can halt production for at least 20 minutes. Marine Harvest hopes to achieve a reliable network and guaranteed access to data from all purview sites, at every phase of the fish production process, by delegating its IT infrastructure to a single vender.

Orange Business Services will provide the farmed salmon juggernaut with solutions that “incorporate a wide range of features to support business operations, such as mobility with Business Everywhere Smart, and application performance with Network Boost, no matter how remote the location.” For weekly reporting meetings, Marine Harvest plans to take advantage of the full cloud-based high-definition video host capabilities also offered by the IT vendor.

“Fish breeding might appear on the surface to be fairly low tech, but to become a world leader, it demands ongoing data monitoring at each stage of the seafood value chain, as well as efficient production flows. Our competitive edge will be strengthened with Orange as our trusted partner who will deliver the strong and secure platform we need to drive our international growth,” said Merethe Johansen, global WAN manager at Marine Harvest.

“We are proud to deliver this state-of-the-art network solution to Marine Harvest, which is a world leader in its business and a front-runner in terms of technology. With the world's largest, seamless network for voice and data and a strong and experienced global organization, we can offer the reliable infrastructure needed to support Marine Harvest’s growth strategy,” added Anne-Sophie Lotgering, senior vice president, Europe, Russia & CIS, at Orange Business Services.
