Newport News seeks bidders for Seafood Industrial Park repairs

Officials in Newport News, Virginia, U.S.A., released a solicitation on Tuesday seeking to make improvements to the city’s Seafood Industrial Park.

The invitation-for-bids document comes more than three months after the park received a USD 404,627 (EUR 340,459) grant from the Port of Virginia for outer harbor repairs and other modifications to the facility. According to the IFB, the project includes repairing an existing 1,500-foot concrete pier and 14 dolphins, which are used for breasting and mooring boats. At least one dolphin will need demolishing and replacing.

Timber fenders and access ladders also will be replaced along the pier, and electrical improvements will be incorporated into the project.

Bids are due at 3 p.m. on 3 October. Solicitation documents can be accessed at: https://vendor.epro.cgipdc.com/webapp/VSSAPPX/Advantage.

Doreen Kopacz, Newport News’ harbor master and port development administrator, said no open house is scheduled for the project. However, prospective bidders can visit the pier after contacting her at [email protected].

According to the Newport News Daily Press, the infrastructure-improvement project will be the second for the park this year. Earlier this summer, the city spent USD 1.2 million (EUR 1 million) to replace and expand the mooring system along the park’s west bulkhead. Half of the funding for that work came from a Port of Virginia grant.

The industrial park is a 39-acre facility, where more than 70 ocean-faring trawlers and 20 in-shore vessels delivered seafood to the park in 2015. The city provides long-term leases to companies at the park, and the rent from those leases brings in more than USD 480,000 (EUR 403,854) annually. Tenants include four seafood processors and retail marks, a crab processor and two ice plants. The park also includes boat and machine repair facilities as well as marine towing and construction companies. The park is fully leased from both a land and vessel mooring capacity.
