Norwegian salmon prices jump 2.5 percent in sixth week of 2024

Norwegian salmon prices increased in the sixth week of 2024.

According to the Nasdaq Salmon Index, the average per-kilogram price of Norwegian salmon in the sixth week of 2024 reached NOK 109.03 (USD 10.30, EUR 9.60) from last week’s 106.37 (USD 10.04, EUR 9.32), marking an increase of NOK 2.66 (USD 0.25, EUR 0.23), or 2.5 percent, week over week.

The index, which provides weekly sales updates and a weighted average price for fresh, head-on gutted Atlantic superior salmon from Norway, reported the average per-kilo price of Norwegian salmon is up NOK 4.51 (USD 0.43, EUR 0.40) over the past four weeks and up NOK 32.54 (USD 3.07, EUR 2.87) over the past 12 weeks.

Salmon between 1 and 2 kilograms accounted for 0.82 percent of total sales had an average price of NOK 74.26 (USD 7.01, EUR 6.54) per kilogram, an increase of NOK 7.04 (USD 0.66, EUR 0.62) week over week of 2024. Salmon between 2 and 3 kilograms accounted for 14.97 percent of total sales, and sold for an average of NOK 88.05 (USD 8.31, EUR 7.75), a NOK 2.71 (USD 0.26, EUR 0.24) increase week over week.

Salmon in the 3- to 4-kilogram range comprised 23.8 percent of total fish sold, which is down from last week’s 27.57 percent, and had a per-kilo average price of NOK 101.75 (USD 9.60, EUR 8.95). This is up from the category's NOK 99 (USD 9.36, EUR 8.69) average price last week, marking an increase of NOK 2.75 (USD 0.26, EUR 0.24) week over week. 

The 4- to-5-kilogram category, comprising 24.1 percent of sales saw its average week-over-week per-kilo price increase by NOK 1.99 (USD 0.19, EUR 0.18), reaching NOK 108.78 (USD 10.26, EUR 9.57).

Norwegian salmon between 5 and 6 kilograms declined NOK 0.94 (USD 0.09, EUR 0.08) to an average per-kilo price of NOK 121.15 (USD 11.44, EUR 10.67), while 6- to 7-kilogram salmon sold for an average of NOK 127.54 (USD 12.04, EUR 11.23) – a decline of NOK 2.34 (USD 0.22, EUR 0.21) week over week. Salmon weighing between 7 and 8 kilograms reached an average per-kilo price of NOK 134.52 (USD 12.71, EUR 11.85), a decline from last week’s 135.35 (USD 12.80, EUR 11.88). Salmon in the 8- to 9-kilogram range decreased NOK 2.67 (USD 0.25, EUR 0.23) in price to reach NOK 137.54 (USD 12.98, EUR 12.10).

February's futures pricing slightly increased to NOK 110 (USD 10.38, EUR 9.67) from last week’s NOK 109 (USD 10.30, EUR 9.56), European salmon exchange Fish Pool reported. March's futures remained flat at NOK 112.75 (USD 10.65, EUR 9.89), flat from the previous week.

Futures pricing for Q1 2024 was reported at NOK 110.09 (USD 10.39, EUR 9.68), which is up from last week’s NOK 109.76 (USD 10.37, EUR 9.63), while Q2 2024 futures pricing hit NOK 116.23 (USD 10.98, EUR 10.24), marking a slight decline from last week’s NOK 116.55 (USD 11.01, EUR 10.22).

The Norwegian Salmon Council's weekly report on Norwegian seafood exports indicated the country exported 15,600 metric tons (MT) of salmon and trout during the sixth week of 2024, up slightly from the 15,280 MT the country exported in the same week of 2023 and above the 13,537 MT exported in week 5 of 2024.

The largest volume of Norwegian salmon was exported to European countries, which bought 11,924 MT – up from the 9,164 MT exported last week.

Specifically, Denmark imported 2,762 MT, up from last week’s 1,590 MT; Poland received 1,906 MT, a jump from last week’s 1,358 MT; France imported 1,514, up from last week’s 1,132 MT; the Netherlands imported 1,264 MT, up from the 1,054 MT; Italy imported 1,199 MT, up from 1,046 MT; Spain imported 1,152,  down from 1,196 MT; and the U.K. imported 1,009 MT, up from 880 MT.

China received 700 MT, down from last week’s 1,152 MT, and the U.S. imported 141 MT, up from last week’s 65 MT.
