Omega Protein to process shrimp hulls

Houston-based fish-oil producer Omega Protein on Thursday announced that it will build a shrimp hull processing plant at its Moss Point, Miss., facility.

Shrimp hull raw material will be provided at no cost by local processors, who will be able to process their product at the facility free of charge, rather than paying disposal fees to third-party landfills.

Construction on the project will begin later this year and is expected to be completed in 2011.

"This project helps to provide an environmentally friendly solution for Mississippi's shrimp processors," said Joe von Rosenberh, chairman and CEO of Omega Protein. "The project will provide significant benefits for Mississippi Gulf Coast communities and illustrates how two industries can both benefit when working together cooperatively."
