Sysco to promote Indian shrimp

The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) on Monday announced it signed a co-branding agreement with Sysco to promote black tiger shrimp from India.

Covering half the cost of the USD 2.3 million campaign, Sysco will promote the brand in three phases. The foodservice distributor will promote the black tiger shrimp through the brand MPEDA Portico.

"This was a creditable achievement for the Indian seafood industry considering the great recession which has shaken even the strongest economics in the world," said Leena Nair, MPEDA chairperson. "Right policies and interventions by government of India-MPEDA and the proactive role played by the industry helped in achieving the positive growth in exports for the fifth consecutive year in the most trying circumstances."

Seafood exports from India reached an all-time high of 602,835 million tons in 2008-09, according to MPEDA.
