Number 5: Maryland officials investigate mass food poisoning incident

The fifth most read story on SeafoodSource in 2024 relates to a food poisoning incident that took place in Maryland at a seafood distributor.

The Howard County Health Department in Columbia, Maryland, U.S.A., reported it was investigating a mass food poisoning incident at NAFCO Wholesale Seafood Distributors, reporting multiple people were sick after allegedly eating the same food. NAFCO later clarified to SeafoodSource that the incident was likely linked to food served during a lunch break that was brought in by another employee and was unrelated to any food produced or provided by the company.

“In the hours after the food was served during yesterday’s lunch break, nearly 50 employees displayed symptoms of food poisoning, the majority of whom were treated and released from area hospitals,” the company said. “NAFCO wishes those affected a safe and speedy recovery.”

Howard County later clarified that there was no danger to the larger community.
