US seafood processor finishes acquisition

American seafood processor and distributor Santa Monica Seafood has finished its acquisition of a number of seafood groups including Los Angeles-based American Fish & Seafood.

Santa Monica, based in Rancho Dominguez, California, USA, acquired umbrella corporation Prospect Enterprises’ seafood division, which includes three groups – American Fish & Seafood, with locations in Los Angeles, Sacramento and Phoenix, Chesapeake Fish Co. of San Diego, Calif., and LA Fish Co. of Los Angeles.

CEO Roger O’Brien noted this is the latest – and largest – acquisition by the company over the past decade.

“While we have completed 5 prior acquisitions over the past 9 years, this one was by far the largest,” O’Brien said. “This one should count as 5 deals since there are 5 separate operating entities being acquired, each one doing a respectable amount of business.”

Santa Monica finished its acquisition officially on 4 July, the company said in a release on its website this week. As part of the deal, the company took on 150 new employees. The company said the acquisition also produced about 1,600 new foodservice and grocery customers. Altogether, the company now has 12 separate facilities for processing, distribution, storage and retail, comprising more than 200,000 square feet.
