Located in New Bedford, Massachusetts, U.S.A., the vibrant heart of New England’s fishing industry, Northern Wind is setting the standard for excellence in the seafood sector.
From fostering a safe, inclusive workplace to championing fair practices with local fishermen, the company’s dedication to sustainability, quality, and transparency shines through every facet of its operations.
“Leading with strength, delivering with integrity. That message is at the core of everything we do,” Northern Wind Founder and Chairman Ken Melanson told SeafoodSource.
The company prioritizes working with fisheries that respect the environment, ensuring seafood is responsibly harvested to protect marine resources for future generations. To enhance this promise, the company has implemented full transparency across its supply chain, meticulously tracking seafood from the moment it is harvested from the ocean to its final distribution.
Building on this philosophy, Northern Wind recently acquired the sales and processing divisions of Atlantic Capes, another respected New Bedford scallop processor. Both companies share a deep passion for and unwavering commitment to processing and delivering premium-quality scallops. By integrating Atlantic Capes’ supply agreements with 16 scallop harvesting vessels into its own, Northern Wind is poised to secure industry-leading landings now and into the future.
“Atlantic Capes customers can continue to expect their orders to be fulfilled without change, but the combined capacities of the two businesses will provide even more options,” Melanson told SeafoodSource.
With the acquisition, Northern Wind added new species to its portfolio, including Galilean clams, alligator, crawfish, mahi-mahi and value-added items such as bacon-wrapped scallops.
Of course, these new items won’t disrupt Northern Wind’s core products. The company will continue to offer a wide variety of scallop products tailored to meet the unique needs of retail, foodservice, and wholesale markets. Northern Wind responsibly harvests scallops from the finest North Atlantic waters while adhering to strict sustainability standards. Customers can feel safe knowing that every order contains top-tier quality products thanks to Northern Wind’s strict transparency and traceability from sea to plate. In addition, all scallops are processed at the company’s grade A USDC-certified state-of-the-art facilities, ensuring the highest standards of food safety and quality.
In addition to scallops, Northern Wind offers fresh and frozen North Atlantic lobster, renowned for its unmatched flavor and quality. All lobster is sustainably sourced directly from MSC-certified fisheries, emphasizing traceability and sustainability. The company provides a variety of lobster products, including tails, claws, lobster meat and whole lobsters, making it a trusted choice for chefs, retailers, and seafood distributors alike.
Northern Wind customers can also purchase the company’s high-quality ahi-tuna, carefully selected for its vibrant color, rich flavor, and optimal freshness. Like its other products, Northern Wind’s ahi-tuna is sourced from sustainable fisheries via responsible harvesting methods. Customers can select tailored cuts that meet the specific requirements of high-end culinary applications, including sushi-grade tuna.
Northern Wind will be showcasing its expanded product line and industry expertise at the upcoming Seafood Expo North America in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A., from March 16-18. Conference attendees are invited to visit the company at Booth #1405 to connect and learn more about its tailored solutions, nationwide reach, industry expertise, and support for retailers.
