As peak summer harvests roll in, PeriShip Vice President of Sales and Business Development Terry O’Connell wants to remind seafood shippers to start looking ahead, preparing their logistics operations for the holiday season surges now to avoid costly disruptions later.
“You want to have efficient and reliable shipping operations during the busiest part of the year,” said O’Connell. “The increase in demand creates a lot of challenges. Don’t let delivery to your customer be one of them.”
According to PeriShip, a premier perishable parcel management service provider specializing in shipping time-sensitive and perishable products, August and September are the ideal months for seafood companies to get their shipment logistics locked down.
“By the time the holidays come around, businesses are already stretched too thin covering additional packing and fulfillment requirements,” O’Connell said. “Most businesses don’t have enough resources to track packages, make updates, and keep customers informed of delays or missing orders.”
PeriShip partners with a variety of industries, including healthcare, gourmet foods, meats, dairy, and seafood. Working directly with U.S. carrier services, PeriShip monitors, tracks, and helps to resolve package delivery challenges throughout their journey to ensure shipments arrive at their destinations on time.
The parcel shipment management company offers a range of services to proactively prevent delays. Among the most effective, according to PeriShip Director of Operations Fred Volk, are the company’s daily and weekly reports, which forecast weather conditions and other potential disruptions along key lanes of transit.
“For seafood suppliers shipping perishable products, knowing where obstacles might arise along the cold chain before tendering their shipments to carriers can mean the difference between successfully getting proteins onto customers’ plates or having entire shipments spoil in transit,” Volk said.
The reports are curated by a team of in-house meteorologists who flag potential issues that could impact deliveries, including storms, wildfires, flooding, or civil unrest. In doing so, PeriShip identifies potential shipping problems in advance, even preemptively generating closed ZIP code reports to offer guidance for shipment planning to minimize delays and keep shipments on track, Volk explained.
“It all comes down to criticality – and communication,” Volk said. “We’re not just tracking disruptions; we’re managing expectations. When we see something like a hurricane or ice storms on the horizon, we alert customers early and let them know exactly when they need to ship by to avoid delays, along with the appropriate time to resume operations. That way, they can plan ahead, avoid costly loss of product, and still get their orders where they need to go, intact and on time.”
In addition to its predictive analytics, PeriShip provides companies with discounted shipping rates along with real-time tracking and status information around the clock through a customer service portal available 24/7. A dedicated team of customer support professionals are also available for personal assistance Monday through Saturday. For parcels containing time-sensitive products like seafood, PeriShip’s team of logistics experts can detect problems in real-time, potentially intervening when service disruptions occur, Volk said. 4pm isn’t the time to figure out there is a problem.
National Sales Executive of LP Seafood and Specialty, Jack Rent, said he has used PeriShip to manage shipments of their premium seafood and specialty gourmet products for more than 20 years.
“PeriShip offers LP Seafood and Specialty (formerly Lobster Place Wholesale) very competitive shipping rates and unparalleled shipment tracking,” he said. “When a hiccup occurs in transit, PeriShip is extremely responsive and works tirelessly to make sure packages are delivered on time to eliminate or minimize loss and maximize reliability.”
According to the company’s statistics, around 17 percent of all shipments experience a shipping exception. “PeriShip’s proactive delivery management services and intervention steps give parcel shippers every possible chance for their packages to arrive on time or with shorter delays,” Volk said.
When managing shipping disruptions, PeriShip keeps customers informed during the last mile by monitoring and updating customers of any exceptions.
Out of the more than 65,000 exceptions PeriShip managed in 2024, the company says 91.9 percent were delivered on the commit date with 97.2 percent arriving by the service commit date or within one additional day in transit. Though Volk explained, for packages that don’t make it on time or arrive damaged, PeriShip handles claim management post-delivery, with a high success rate for satisfactory claim resolution, including full value payouts for eligible claims.
PeriShip’s service model includes a monthly fee that covers discounted shipping rates and active parcel shipment monitoring, with a premium tier available for high-volume shippers, which O’Connell said, is especially valuable for companies shipping directly to consumers during busy seasons.
“Shipping seafood is high-stakes—we’re here so businesses don’t have to go it alone,” O’Connell said. “When things go sideways, our job is to already have a plan in place.”
