Canned salmon suppliers benefit from big government buy

Trident Seafoods, Ocean Beauty Seafoods, and Icicle Seafoods have won more than USD 2 million (EUR 1.8 million) in canned pink salmon contracts from the United States government.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) bought USD 2.6 million (EUR 2.3 million) worth of the seafood for child nutrition “and other related domestic food assistance programs” for fiscal year 2019, USDA said in a document announcing the contracts.

Ocean Beauty is supplying nearly USD 1.4 million (EUR 1.2 million) worth of canned pink salmon, while Icicle is supplying more than USD 959,000 (EUR 843,000), and Trident is supplying more than USD 280,000 (EUR 246,000).

However, the USDA declined to purchase around 22,000 cases of canned salmon “due to no bids received and vendor constraints,” the agency said.
