A truck carrying a load of Phillips Foods Majestic Blue Crab Meat was stolen on 4 April in Navojoa, Mexico, while in transit to the United States.
Keely Dziuban, marketing director for Phillips, declined to give the total value of the crab on the truck, but she told SeafoodSource that it was a full truck carrying thousands of pounds of crab meat.
“This theft is under full investigation, and Phillips is working closely with authorities in Mexico and the U.S.,” the supplier said in a statement.
“Our first concern is always our customers. We want to make sure they aren’t buying stolen crab meat that’s been subjected to mishandling,” said Phillips President and COO Dean Flowers in the statement.
Phillips is urging its distributors to only purchase Majestic Blue Crab Meat directly from Phillips or its two re-distributors, DOT Foods, or RW Zant.
“Every case of crab meat purchased direct from these three points are assured to meet strict quality control standards and precise temperature controls,” Phillips said.
Phillips Majestic Blue Crab Meat, wild-caught from Mexico, is hand-picked and pasteurized, “providing chefs and operators an alternative to domestic blue crab without sacrificing on quality or consistency,” the supplier said on its website.
