Wholesale prices of fresh bluefin tuna at the Tsukiji Wholesale Market at the end of April averaged JPY 10,440 (USD 94.13, EUR 79.66) for domestic product (from Chiba Prefecture), and in the range of JPY 2,100 to 3,218 (USD 18.92 to 29.00, EUR 16.01 to 24.54) for imported.
Southern bluefin on the market was mainly frozen and averaged JPY 1,903 (USD 17.15, EUR 14.51). Fresh bigeye tuna (from Wakayama Prefecture) averaged JPY 1,651 (USD 14.88, EUR 12.59), while frozen (both import and domestic) averaged JPY 1,134 (USD 10.22, EUR 8.65). Fresh yellowfin tuna (from Okinawa) averaged JPY 1,818 (USD 16.38, EUR 13.87), while frozen averaged JPY 961 (USD 8.66, EUR 7.33).
Japanese Customs reported 2018 first quarter tuna import figures as follows for fresh product:
- Yellowfin tuna totaled 833,618 kg, valued at JPY 878,837,000 (USD 8 million, EUR 6.8 million). Top suppliers were Palau (306,227 kg) and Myanmar (240,161 kg), Sri Lanka (86,595 kg), Australia (41,955 kg), and Tonga (35,626 kg).
- Bigeye tuna totaled 839,371 kg, valued at JPY 937,579,000 (USD 8.6 million, EUR 7.3 million). Top suppliers were Indonesia (495,245 kg), and Palau (222,318 kg).
- Atlantic bluefin tuna totaled 70,295 kg, valued at JPY 190,510,000 (USD 1.7 million, EUR 1.5 million). Greece (26,965 kg) and the United States (918,736 kg) were the main suppliers.
- Pacific bluefin totaled 1,272,569 kg, valued at JPY 2,076,188,000 (USD 19 million, EUR 16.2 million). Mexico (942,074), and South Korea (328,069 kg) were the main suppliers.
- Southern bluefin imported to Japan in the same period totaled 38,286 kg, valued at JPY 49,331,000 (USD 451,798, EUR 386,621). Origins were Indonesia (28,631 kg), Australia (5187 kg), and New Zealand (4,468 kg).
Japanese Customs reported 2018 first quarter tuna import figures as follows for frozen product:
- Yellowfin tuna totaled 8,593,829 kg, valued at JPY 1,420,612,000 (USD 13 million, EUR 11 million). Main suppliers were Ghana, Belize, and Indonesia.
- Bigeye tuna totaled 13,147,030 kg, valued at JPY 11,160,280,000 (USD 102.2 million, 87 million). Top suppliers were Taiwan, China, the Seychelles, and Vanuatu.
- Atlantic bluefin tuna totaled 58,937 kg, valued at JPY 111,590,000 (USD 1 million, EUR 869,000). Top suppliers were South Korea and Malta.
- Pacific bluefin at 70,794 kg, valued at 32,981,000, all from South Korea.
- Southern bluefin totaled 21,610 kg, valued at 18,794,000, all from Taiwan.
