The farm-gate prices of pangasius in Vietnam rose slightly in the week ending 11 April from the week before, but remained much lower year-on-year.
The rates in An Giang Province in Vietnam's Mekong Delta ranged between VND 24,500 and VND 25,500 (USD 1.05 and 1.09, EUR 0.93 and 0.97) per kilogram over the week of between 5-11 April, according to latest data from Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade.
The prices were about 2 percent higher than the previous week, but still went down 12.5 to 15 percent from the same week in 2018. And these prices were for the size of between 0.8 to 1.0 kilogram fish.
Data from Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) showed the pond prices in Dong Thap Province in the same week ending 11 April were VND 23,000 and VND 25,000 (USD 0.99-1.07, EUR 0.87-0.95) per kilogram for smaller size of 0.7-0.8 kilogram fish. The prices were higher than the VND 22,000 and VND 24,500 (USD 0.94-1.03, EUR 0.83-0.91) per kilogram in the previous week ending 4 April.
The increase in the prices in the first two weeks occurred as processors stepped up purchases for processing to serve export contracts. But the prices are unlikely to rise to the levels reached last year, a source at VASEP said Thursday.
In late March, the pond prices of pangasius in Vietnam fell due to weak demand, particularly from the two main markets of the United States and China.
