Value of Vietnam’s pangasius exports to US jumped 358 percent in September

Vietnam’s September exports of pangasius to the United States soared by 357.6 percent in value compared to the same month last year, according to a statement from Vietnam’s Directorate of Fisheries.

Those sales were worth USD 47.12 million (EUR 41.1 million), the agency said.

Vietnam’s exports of pangasius to the U.S. were worth USD 368.4 million (EUR 321.28 million) in the first nine months of 2018, up 41 percent over 2017.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the United States Department of Agriculture in a 14 September constituent update said it will declare the fish inspection systems for siluriformes in Vietnam, China, and Thailand are equivalent to U.S. standards.

The equivalency determination, which is subject to a 30-day period of public comment and a final decision by the FSIS before it is finalized, will allow species including pangasius and basa from those countries to enter the U.S. market.

The FSIS decision, combined with higher tariffs the U.S. imposed on Chinese pangasius products during the Sino-U.S. trade war, is expected to help further boost the future market for exports of pangasius from Vietnam to the U.S., the directorate said.

As a result, Vietnam expects to record USD 500 million (EUR 436 million) in sales of pangasius to the U.S. this year, up 45.2 percent from 2017.

In total, Vietnam exported pangasius worth USD 175.2 million (EUR 152.53 million) in September, up 40.8 percent year-on-year. The export value rose 23 percent from a year earlier, to USD 1.6 billion (EUR 1.39 billion) in the first nine months of 2017, according to the directorate.
