Aquanor back to Icelandic business after strike ends

Executives with Boston, Massachusetts-based importer and distributor Aquanor Marketing feel great about exhibiting at Seafood Expo North America, taking place 19 to 21 March in Boston, Massachusetts, especially now that the labor strike by Icelandic fishermen is over.

“Aquanor is one of the largest importers of fresh fish from Iceland and therefore our business was negatively impacted by the strike,” Eric Kaiser, president of Aquanor Marketing, told SeafoodSource. “Although the strike is now over, some of the customers are still working with whatever product or country of origin they replaced their Icelandic groundfish programs with. We have received daily shipments of groundfish since the strike officially ended. It will take some time to regain customer’s confidence in a steady supply of Icelandic groundfish products and get the volumes back to pre-strike levels.”

Still, Aquanor is once again supplying cod, haddock, turbot, wolfish and other Icelandic groundfish.

In addition, the distributor recently added sustainably farmed barramundi from Singapore.

“Barramundi is becoming a very interesting product to both retailers and foodservice operators. As the farming methods are being refined and the growth improved, barramundi will become more available,” Kaiser said.

Aquanor also has brought back WiAnno oysters from Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

“We were offline with the WiAnnos due to a gap occurring between generations,” Kaiser said. “This was the first time in 10 years that the WiAnnos were not available for any extended period of time. We now are solidly into the next generation and have seen great growth. WiAnno Oysters will be continually available for the foreseeable future.”

Aquanor also said that its Arctic Charr from Iceland was certified by the Global Aquaculture Alliance as being farm-raised in a Best Aquaculture Practices-certified facility.

“By using our BAP-certified Arctic Charr, know that you and your customers are supporting responsible aquaculture practices,” the company said in a statement.

Aquanor is exhibiting at SENA17 at Booth No. 916.
