Advancing responsible aquafeed in the face of growing value chain expectations
Description:
The global aquafeed market is shaped by steady demand growth alongside increasing scrutiny. Marine ingredients like fishmeal and fish oil have been a foundation of aquafeed formulation for decades. Today, on average, they make up 10 percent of the aquafeed ingredient basket.
The MarinTrust programme spans the marine ingredients value chain, through two internationally recognized third-party certification Standards as well as the Improver Programme. MarinTrust is dedicated to marine ingredient production factories, allowing them to gain recognition for their responsible sourcing, traceability and production of marine ingredients.
The webinar features three panelists: Libby Woodhatch, Executive Chair of MarinTrust, Nicola Clark, Impacts Manager at MarinTrust. They are joined by Jimmy Anastacio, Economic Advisor to the National Chamber of Fisheries of Ecuador, where he has led strategic initiatives to strengthen responsible fishing, implement Fishery Improvement Projects -FIPs (he co-ordinated the Ecuadorian MarinTrust FIP), and develop tools to improve traceability, information generation, and decision-making across fisheries.
Together, they discuss traceability and assurance as well as the impact that MarinTrust has on driving improvements for the producers and users of marine ingredients. Exploring the Ecuadorian case study, they dive into the many years of collective work which resulted in 2025 in the successful assessment of the country’s small pelagic fishery. This milestone enabled fishmeal and fish oil production sites sourcing from this fishery to apply for a third-party audit that would grant MarinTrust recognition at the fishmeal and fish oil production factory level.
