Industry Leadership in Accelerating the Global Adoption of Electronic Monitoring
Information:
Description:
Tuna is one of the most-fished and least-monitored commodities in the world. It is the foundation of a fishing industry that covers three times the area of land-based farming and helps the three billion people worldwide who depend on fish for protein. While global tuna stocks are considered relatively stable—with 11 percent classified as overfished in 2023—tuna fisheries are responsible for some of the highest rates of marine ecosystem impacts, including bycatch of ocean wildlife.
One of the biggest obstacles to sustainably managing global tuna fisheries, protecting ocean wildlife and delivering tuna products that inspire consumer confidence is lack of on-the-water monitoring and data. Often, fisheries authorities and supply chain actors do not have the data needed to ensure that the vessels they source from are complying with fishing regulations and social standards. Companies that are unable to verify compliance with environmental and social standards risk losing business, in addition to creating operational and business risks throughout the supply chain.
Electronic monitoring—the use of onboard video cameras, GPS, and sensors to monitor and verify fishing activities—is a proven tool to help strengthen transparency and provide critical data needed for the sustainable management of tuna and other ocean species. Having eyes on the water allows companies to have confidence that industrial tuna fishing activities were sourced legally and sustainably while leveling the playing field for law-abiding fishers.
Since tuna migrates thousands of miles across dozens of territories—each with their own regulations, laws and enforcement mechanisms—international cooperation managing and monitoring stocks is needed. In this fluid seascape, partnership is essential to drive industry-wide demand for sustainably caught tuna.
In celebration of World Tuna Day, hear from the world’s leading tuna suppliers, retailers and governing bodies about why they are taking action to advance toward a transparent first mile of the supply chain through enhanced on-the-water monitoring.
