Tourists driving up to Maine get hungry on the road.
Seeking a quick bite before getting to the foodie destinations of Portland, Rockland or Bar Harbor, further north, many end up at the Bite into Maine food truck in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
Unsurprisingly given its name, Bite into Maine specializes in lobster rolls, perhaps the state’s signature dish. But the food truck does things a little differently than its more traditional lobster shack brethren, offering curry, wasabi or chipotle options.
“A lot of people visiting Maine these days are food-focused. They create food itineraries,” truck co-owner Sarah Sutton said. “We like to do things a little differently to get them excited and draw them in.”
Now in its sixth season of business (open from April to October), the truck offers all of its variations of lobster rolls for USD 17.49 (EUR 15.54). Each one comes with 4.5 ounces of fresh lobster meat on a buttered hot dog bun and variations of sauces chosen by the customer.
Sutton said her top-selling item is the “classic,” which is topped with a homemade creamy coleslaw that is composed of cabbage, shredded carrots, mayonnaise, cider vinegar, sugar and salt and pepper.
“It provides a sweet and salty bite with a crunch,” Sutton said. “It’s a pretty irresistible combo – one bite and you’re hooked.”
Sutton sources her lobster locally from Maine Seafood Ventures, gets her sea salt from Cozy Harbor, and gets her rolls from a local baker.
“I think the key to our success is that we serve food that’s tied into our destination here in Maine,” Sutton said.
