Alaska Salmon Catch Expected to Drop

Alaska's salmon catch is projected to reach 137.4 million fish this year, which would be down from 212.6 million fish in 2007, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game reported this week. An expected pink salmon harvest of 66.4 million fish, which would be down 77.5 million fish from last year, is predominately responsible for the anticipated drop in the state's total salmon landings. However, chum, coho and chinook landings are forecasted to increase slightly to 18.7 million, 4.4 million and 672,000 fish, respectively, this year, while sockeye landings are forecasted to remain about the same at 47.2 million fish in 2008.
