8.) StarKist (Dongwon Group)
Headquarters: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
One of the largest tuna fishers in the world, StarKist produces a full retail line of canned and pouched yellowfin, albacore, and skipjack tuna. The company was purchased by South Korean conglomerate Dongwon Industries in 2008 for more than USD 300 million (EUR 253 million). The company, which owns no tuna fishing boats (though it does source from Dongwon-owned boats), runs a production facility in American Samoa with more than 2,000 workers – about half of the company’s roughly 4,000 total employees. The company also has processing facilities in Ecuador and Senegal. All of its product packages bear the image of its iconic mascot, Charlie the Tuna, who made his first appearance in the early 1960s.
