Australian salmon farmer opens new smokehouse

Australian salmon farmer Huon Aquaculture has opened its newest facility, a AUD 12 million (USD 8.9 million, EUR 8.1 million) smokehouse and product innovation center.

The opening marks the end of a construction project that began in March 2014. The facility, located in northern Tasmania, will create 70 new jobs, and is part of a long-term AUD 160 million (USD 118.8 million, EUR 107.8 million) growth strategy for the company, according to Huon CEO and co-founder Peter Bender.

The facility will also bring value-added processing to Tasmania, a first for the company, according to Huon’s executive director and co-founder Frances Bender.

“This facility is a crucial step in ensuring we are taking the highest quality, innovative products to market, all proudly carrying the Tasmanian brand,” Frances Bender said.
