Canadian supplier earns ASC certification

Canadian wholesale and retail supplier Seacore Seafood earned chain-of-custody certification from the Aquaculture Stewardship Council.

“We will be seeing some tilapia and pangasius that are certified along with other species in the near future,” the company said.

In addition, the first ASC-certified pangasius fillet was officially sold at a branch of Dirk van den Broek supermarkets in the Netherlands.

As of this week, more than 2,000 supermarkets in the Netherlands will sell bags of pangasius fillets bearing the ASC eco-label for sustainably farmed fish. The first ASC certificate for pangasius was awarded to Vietnam company Vinh Hoan earlier this month and is sold under the Queens brand.

“When choosing suppliers with whom to work, their attitude towards sustainability is a deciding factor,” said Harry Hoogendoorn, director of Queens Products. “Close cooperation with such suppliers has resulted in a sustainable and controlled production process over the years. We are proud that our tilapia supplier, Regal Springs, was the first to become ASC certified for tilapia, and that our pangasius supplier, Vinh Hoan has now followed suit by becoming the first ASC-certified company for pangasius. The ASC label can be found on all our tilapia and pangasius products from the end of September.”
