DeBeers, known worldwide as a diamond producer and seller, has announced it is looking into producing a seafood farm in South Africa.
DeBeers is seeking bids to build a farm in the country’s Limpopo province, near the company’s Venetia diamond mine, according to a mining industry media article.
The article does not specify what kind of farm, only that it is “an aquaculture farm.” The company solicited the bids after doing a feasibility study in the area, and said it is looking to use the new farm to support the local community through job creation.
According to the article, this is not the first time DeBeers has ventured into aquaculture. The company created an abalone farm in South Africa in 2011.
