Farm gets world’s first two-star BAP status

Chile’s first mussel farm has become the first in the world to receive two-star status for mussels, according to the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA).

Pesquera Apiao’s processing plant in Quemchi, Chile, and seven of its mussel farm sites in the same area, received the certification under GAA’s Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification program. The two-star status comes from both the farms and processing facilities receiving certification.

The company processes about 50,000 metric tons (MT), split almost evenly between the two processing plants. The company markets to Europe, Asia and the United States. Products include IQF mussel meat, whole shell vacuum-packed mussels and half shell vacuum-packed mussels.
