Is Chile’s salmon-farming industry picking up?

Signs that Chile’s salmon-farming industry is on the road to recovery were apparent on Thursday in the third-quarter results of two European aquaculture companies.

Dutch fish-feed manufacturer Nutreco reported that its fish-feed volumes to Chile were up 36.9 percent in the third quarter of 2010, compared to the same period in 2009.

“In the fish-feed segment we are pleased with … the strong recovery in Chile,” said Nutreco CEO Wout Dekker.

On Thursday, Nutreco posted third-quarter revenues of EUR 1.34 billion (USD 1.85 billion), up 11 percent from the third quarter of 2009. Through the first nine months of 2010, the company’s revenues reached EUR 3.59 billion (USD 4.97 billion), up 7.7 percent from the same period in 2009.

Also on Thursday, Norwegian aquaculture technology firm Akva reported that “during the third quarter the incipient recovery of the Chilean market became more evident showing a sound order inflow, also going into the fourth quarter.”

Akva posted third-quarter operating revenues of NOK 212.3 million (USD 36.1 million, EUR 26.1 million), up from NOK 139.8 million in the third quarter of 2009. The company’s third-quarter operating profit totaled NOK 10.2 million (USD 1.7 million, EUR 1.3 million), compared to NOK 7.4 million last year.
