Newfoundland aquaculture production up 43%

According to the provincial Economic Review 2011, the total aquaculture production in Newfoundland and Labrador was expected to be up 49.7 percent to approximately 23,000 metric in 2011.

The value of the aquaculture industry — salmon, trout and blue mussels — was expected to be approximately CAD 170 million by the end of the year.

The optimistic year-end projection was based on what happened in the aquaculture industry in the first two quarters of 2011. In that time period, aquaculture production increased 43.5 percent over the same period in 2010 with a total of 10,059 metric tons produced.
