Fishing boss with ties to African expansion now sitting in China’s parliament

China’s international fishing sector is being represented at China’s annual week-long National People’s Congress by the boss of the Hong Dong Long Distance Fishing Company.

The company’s head, Lan Ping Yong, is an official delegate at the congress, which is sitting the week of 12 March in Beijing.

In a hint to the political influence enjoyed by fishing companies, Lan Ping’s company celebrated his elevation with a written and photographic tribute to his “outstanding” contribution to the development of China’s long-distance fishing sector and his contributions to the “development of Sino-African economic and cultural relations.”

Lan Ping seems well-gotten in the government offices of numerous African nations where his company has operations. Photos published by the firm show Lan Ping posing with the president of Mauritania and that country’s fishing minister; Zanzibar’s deputy prime minister and its ministers of fisheries and transportation; and the former prime minister of Tanzania.
