North Haven, Maine, U.S.A.-based fisherman Marshal Ames, 57, died on 21 June after falling overboard the fishing vessel Long Faces.
The Maine Marine Patrol is investigating the fatality, which occurred in Hurricane Sound, near Vinalhaven, Maine.
The incident was reported around 4:45 p.m. through a distress call over VHF radio, according to a release by Maine Marine Patrol. The U.S. Coast Guard Station in Rockland responded alongside Maine Marine Patrol, but “a good Samaritan from Hurricane Island was able to recover Ames’ body” and began CPR on shore at Dyer Island before crews had arrived on the scene.
Ames was pronounced dead by Vinalhaven emergency medical responders on shore.
The Long Faces captain, Geoffrey Barrett, 39, was contacted by Maine Marine Patrol officers following Ames’ death, and an ensuing altercation led to the arrest of Barrett on charges of assault. He was also charged with refusal to submit to a chemical test, which is a felony charge of “Boating Under the Influence.” Theodore Lane, a 27-year-old crew member, was also charged with assault and disorderly conduct.
Lane and Barrett were arrested and taken to Knox County Jail, and Ames’ body is being examined by the Chief Medical Examiner's Office. The Maine Marine Patrol officers are continuing the investigation with the Knox County District Attorney’s Office and the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit.
