Samherji nets UK whitefish distributor

Icelandic seafood company Samherji has purchased Collins Seafood, a marketing and distribution company based in the United Kingdom, saying that the acquisition would strengthen its position in this important cod and haddock market.

Headquartered in Newton Aycliffe, Collins Seafood sells and distributes frozen seafood in central and northern England to a large number of customers, predominantly fish and chip restaurants.

According to Samherji, Collins achieved a turnover in excess of GBP 60 million (USD 79.7 million, EUR 68 million) for the past operating year, selling more than 10,000 metric tons (MT) of seafood from Norway, Russia, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and elsewhere. It has also been a major customer for Samherji in the English market for many years.

Richard Collins, who founded the business 35 years ago will continue to act as managing director and manage the company’s operations. It currently employs over 30 people in office and distribution roles.

Samherji said that its local subsidiary Seagold has been selling and marketing its products in the U.K. market for 21 years and will continue to work closely with Collins Seafood moving forward.
