Alaska salmon cleared for MSC recertification

The majority of Alaska’s salmon fishery on Tuesday was cleared for Marine Stewardship Council recertification.

While 13 of the 14 fisheries that make up the Alaska salmon fishery were cleared for recertification, the assessment team said it needs additional information in order to conduct the assessment of the Prince William Sound fishery.

Six conditions of certification were placed on the fishery for the 13 areas deemed sustainable. Click here to read the full assessment.

There is now a 15 working day period during which a party may lodge a notice of objection.

The Alaska salmon fishery was originally certified in 2000 and passed its first recertification in 2007.

The Purse Seine Vessel Owner's Association acted as the client for the recertification after the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation decided not to seek recertification on behalf of the industry.
