Another group calling for Thai fishing reform

A representative from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has said the Thai government needs a new series of reforms to help fight illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and ongoing labor-related problems.

Simon Funge-Smith, FAO’s senior fishery officer, made the remarks during a seminar in Thailand on the future of the fishing industry, according to the National News Bureau of Thailand.

Smith said Thailand and other countries around the world do not require enough legal punishments and don’t do enough to stop IUU fishing.

Smith also said Thailand needs to do more to address ongoing labor issues, matching the image it is trying to present of its fishing industry.
