BAP-certified pangasius now a ‘Good Alternative’

Certified Vietnamese pangasius farmers are getting a two-for-one certification deal on sustainability, according to the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA).

Farmers who produce two, three and four-star pangasius under the GAA’s Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) standard are producing seafood that is the equivalent to a yellow “Good Alternative” rating from the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program.

According to a GAA statement, Seafood Watch will recommend BAP-certified pangasius is a good alternative purchasing option.

The GAA strengthened its own certification requirements for habitat mitigation, water discharge and escapes, in order to meet the Good Alternative requirements.
