NOAA Fisheries has announced the availability of USD 20 million (EUR 19.1 million) in grant funding for coastal habitat restoration and projects that advance the climate resilience priorities of Tribes and underserved communities.

“NOAA is committed to advancing equity in everything we do,” NOAA Fisheries Assistant Administrator Janet Coit said in a statement. “Through meaningful engagement and coalition-building, these investments will allow Tribes and underserved communities to restore the lands and waters that support their economies and cultures.”

NOAA Fisheries will consider proposals ranging from USD 75,000 to USD 2 million (EUR 71,507 to EUR 1.9 million), with typical awards ranging from USD 250,000 to USD 1 million (EUR 238,358 to EUR 953,401).

Of the USD 20 million, 15 percent is set aside for “U.S. federally recognized Tribes, Alaska Native Corporations, and organizations that represent Tribes through formal legal agreements.”

“Tribes and underserved communities are at the forefront of the climate crisis and are often affected the most by hazards such as coastal storms and flooding,” U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo said. “Thanks to President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, we are making sure Tribes have the resources they need for habitat restoration efforts that strengthen ecological and economic prosperity.”

This will be the third and final round of awards for the Coastal Habitat Restoration and Resilience Grants for Tribes and Underserved Communities funding opportunity. The first round resulted in USD 25 million (EUR 24 million) in funding for 35 projects, while the second round included USD 35 million (EUR 33.4 million) for 27 projects.

The Coastal Habitat Restoration and Resilience Grants for Tribes and Underserved Communities is one of four funding opportunities established with funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, a major piece of legislation that has provided the Biden administration hundreds of millions in funding for habitat restoration and climate resilience projects.

Earlier this month, the Biden administration announced that USD 100 million (EUR 95 million) was available for the third and final round of awards for the Transformational Habitat Restoration and Coastal Resilience funding opportunity.

NOAA fisheries will host three live webinars to provide additional information to interested potential applicants.

Applications are due 12 May 2025.
