China launches pilot inspection project for vessels in Ecuador, Peru

China’s fisheries authorities have launched a pilot inspection program for Chinese vessels operating in Latin American waters, following accusations of illegal fishing in Ecuador.

The Fisheries Vessels Inspection Bureau at the Ministry of Agriculture, which oversees fisheries, hosted a meeting in Beijing recently at which bureau director Li Chang Jian announced the pilot. He said the project would “improve the quality” of inspections of Chinese vessels in international waters, while also aiming to increase “socialization” of vessels operators. This likely means increasing awareness among vessel operators of international regulations on fisheries.

The Beijing meeting was attended by the representatives of the China Long Distance Fishing Association, a secretive organization composed of leaders of China’s fishing firms operating overseas.
