Culimer publicizes bluefin tuna ‘alternative’

Seafood supplier Culimer B.V. earlier this week announced that it will begin carrying circle-hook super-frozen yellowfin tuna.

The tuna is the closest alternative the bluefin tuna, said the Dutch company. The fish is caught using World Wildlife Fund-supported circle hooks by the Vietnamese longline tuna fishery and stored and processed at ultra-low temperatures, making for a sustainable tuna supply chain, according to Culimer.

The circle hooks replace the traditional J-hooks used in the fishery. The J-hooks often result in bycatch, and replacing them reduces bycatch by up to 80 percent.

Additionally, Culimer will sell a limited edition of DaiRent Super Freezers at the European Seafood Exposition in Brussels in late April.
