Eroski, WWF partner

The World Wildlife Fund announced on Tuesday that it’s teaming up with Grupo Eroski to help the Spanish supermarket chain develop and implement a sustainable seafood sourcing strategy.

Over the next 18 months, WWF will assess the sustainability of the species Eroski sources, while Eroski will provide WWF with detailed information on its supply chain and the origin of the fish it sells.

Priority will be given to fisheries already certified under the Marine Stewardship Council program, and non-MSC fisheries will be encouraged to pursue certification. Eroski will also give priority to suppliers involved in the WWF-supported Aquaculture Dialogues program.

“This is a project of vital importance, since ensuring the sustainable origin of the products we sell is one of the priorities of our company,” said Marta Areizaga, Eroski’s director of social responsibility.

Juan Carlos del Olmo, secretary general of WWF Spain, called the partnership “a milestone for the conservation of our seas,” adding that Eroski is the first large Spanish retailer to make such a commitment.
